SEA STATE / 1

An imagining of radical empathy between bodies of water.

SEA STATE breathes life from one body of water (Westernport Bay / Warn Marin’) to another (Salton Sea / Lake Cahuilla). It is presented on the lands of the Torres-Martinez Cahuilla Band of Indians, the original sovereign tribe of Lake Cahuilla.

A part of the 2022 Bombay Beach Biennale, a renegade celebration of art, music, and philosophy that takes place on the literal edge of western civilization - the shores of the receding Salton Sea. The Biennale was founded in 2015 as a public arts event untethered from the commercial art world of galleries, museums, and art fairs, and as a tool to amplify the largely unknown and ignored ecological crisis that is the Salton Sea.

An independent work by Janenne Willis (photography, field recordings and site specific installation) featuring Tilman Robinson (sound design), Geoffrey Watson × Rosie Sayers (costumes) and Sacha Guggenheimer × Uma Neave × Hinetera Marino (breathers).
